All Hail The King | Breaking Bad Illustration #1 for the California Literary Review

I'll admit it—I'm a late bloomer when it comes to Breaking Bad. I heard people raving about the meth-riddled masterpiece for years, but it wasn't until several months ago that I decided to see what all the fuss was about.

(Cue the season-per-sitting binges.)

I remember spending Saturdays sitting cross-legged on my bed with C., anxiously twisting dreads while watching one episode after the next. Sometimes we would forget to eat, and often an entire day would slip by without us moving an inch from the screen. Yeah, it felt a little dirty, but at least we weren't cooking meth.

Last week, Paul Comstock, editor and founder of The California Literary Review, asked me to create an illustration for each of their weekly Breaking Bad recaps. Naturally I said yes within seconds.

The recaps post the day after the episode airs, so I have to anticipate the plot based on whatever teasers I can find and create an illustration ahead of time. It's an interesting creative challenge, and I'm looking forward to seeing how my ideas match up to the episodes after the fact.

Since the last season ended with Walt as the new meth King, I based my composition on playing card layouts and used the double-view as an opportunity to highlight his transformation from Season 1 to Season 5.

Read the recap here and check back next week to see my illustration for Episode 2.

Haha! Nice. I can't to watch the fourth season (and bryan cranston at it again). I love that actor (since Malcolm in the Middle), and it's cool to see him Beejohnsoned.

Ah man! I just found your work from the /r/breakingBad sub reddit, and it's amazing, you contemplated doing Jesse as a card?

I haven't, only because his physical transformation wasn't as apparent. Thank you for checking out my work! I'm sure another illustrator will do an entire card series eventually, and I can't wait to see it!
